Sports Massage Therapy Session

What is Sports & Remedial Massage?

Sports and Remedial massage can help with a wide range of issues for both athletes and non-athletes. While sports massage focuses heavily on performance, recovery, and injury prevention, remedial massage acts like a "detective" to locate and treat specific mechanical dysfunctions and chronic pain.

Both are targeted, hands-on treatments  designed to:

  • Release tight or overworked muscles

  • Reduce pain and stiffness

  • Improve flexibility and movement

  • Support injury recovery

What Can it Help With?

Our practitioners are trained to assess and treat specific musculoskeletal complaints, including:

  • Back, neck, and shoulder pain: Relieving tension caused by heavy lifting or poor posture.

  • Headaches and migraines: Easing the tension in the upper back and neck that frequently triggers them.

  • Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI): Addressing pain from occupational repetitive tasks (like typing or painting).

  • Tendonitis and physical strains: Assisting in the healing of issues like tennis/golfer's elbow and Achilles tendonitis.

  • Sciatica: Reducing muscle tightness and pressure around the sciatic nerve.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

The Initial Consultation

Your first session will always begin with a review of your intake form and a discussion to understand your body and your goals.

Physical Assessment

Before you get on the table your therapist will carry out any assessment required to determine the route cause of your problem.

The Hands-On Treatment

  • You will be asked to undress to your underwear and to lie on a treatment table covered by a towel or sheet in private. Your therapist will only uncover the specific area they are working on at that moment.

  • Techniques may include:

    • Deep tissue massage techniques

    • Active techniques such as Neuro-Muscular Technique (NMT) or Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF)

    • Cupping or acupuncture

  • Communication is key: You can expect some discomfort (often called "good pain"), but you please tell your therapist immediately if the pressure is too much.

Post-Treatment Advice

You will likely be given specific stretches or exercises to do at home to maintain the results. Then your therapist will advise you on whether you need a follow-up appointment and how soon you should return.
