Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine in Whitchurch, Cardiff

Balancing Health Through Traditional Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture is one of the most widely recognised therapies within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a healthcare system that has been practised for thousands of years. Traditional Chinese Medicine takes a holistic approach to health, considering the connection between physical symptoms, emotional wellbeing and overall balance within the body. Using very fine needles placed at carefully selected points, acupuncture aims to support the body's natural healing processes and promote a sense of wellbeing. Treatments are tailored to the individual, taking into account your symptoms, health history, lifestyle and personal health goals.

Based at our Whitchurch clinic, our independent practitioner provides professional acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine consultations in a calm, welcoming environment.

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment in Whitchurch, Cardiff

1

Core Principles

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a holistic system of healthcare that seeks to understand patterns of imbalance within the body. Rather than focusing solely on a specific symptom, TCM considers your overall health, lifestyle, sleep, stress levels, digestion and wellbeing when developing a treatment approach. Acupuncture is often used alongside other TCM principles to support the body's natural ability to restore balance and maintain health.

2

Holistic Approach

TCM treats the whole person, not just the presenting symptom. This means your acupuncturist will ask about your sleep, digestion, emotional state, energy levels and lifestyle as part of every consultation. This depth of understanding allows for a treatment plan that addresses underlying imbalances, not just surface-level symptoms. Many patients find that conditions they hadn't connected, such as fatigue, digestive concerns and headaches, begin to improve together as overall balance is restored.

3

Evidence-Based Practice

Acupuncture cardiff patients access is supported by a growing body of clinical research. Systematic reviews and clinical guidelines recognise acupuncture as an effective treatment for chronic pain, headaches and migraines, osteoarthritis and nausea. The World Health Organisation lists over 28 conditions for which acupuncture has been demonstrated effective in clinical trials. Martin Genovese's practice integrates Traditional Chinese Medicine principles with an awareness of current Western medical evidence.

How Acupuncture May Support You

People seek acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine for a variety of reasons:

Pain Management

Acupuncture is widely used for reducing pain associated with musculoskeletal conditions including back pain, neck pain, joint pain, sciatica and sports injuries. The fine needles stimulate specific points, triggering the release of endorphins, the body's natural pain-relieving chemicals. Stimulating these points also promotes healing by increasing local blood flow and reducing inflammation in the affected tissues.

Stress & Anxiety Reduction

Stress and tension respond well to acupuncture treatment. Many patients describe a profound sense of calm during and after sessions, often feeling deeply relaxed or pleasantly sleepy. Regular acupuncture can support the nervous system's ability to manage stress, reduce anxiety, and improve emotional wellbeing over time.

Improved Sleep Quality

Acupuncture has been shown to improve sleep quality by regulating the nervous system and supporting the body's natural sleep-wake cycle. For patients experiencing insomnia, restless sleep or fatigue, a course of acupuncture treatment can help restore more consistent and restorative sleep patterns. Many patients report improved sleep as one of the first benefits they notice.

Migraine & Headache Relief

Acupuncture cardiff patients use to treat migraines and headaches has a strong evidence base. Clinical guidelines from NICE recommend acupuncture as a treatment option for chronic tension headaches and migraines. By addressing both the trigger points contributing to headaches and the underlying patterns of imbalance in the body, acupuncture can significantly reduce the frequency, duration and intensity of migraines and chronic headaches.

Fertility Support

Acupuncture is increasingly used to support fertility and IVF treatments. Martin has experience working with patients undergoing fertility treatment, supporting both the physical and emotional aspects of the IVF journey. Acupuncture may help regulate hormonal balance and reduce the stress associated with fertility treatment.

Digestive Health

TCM has a long tradition of treating digestive ailments: from irritable bowel syndrome to bloating and nausea. Acupuncture needles placed at specific points can influence the nervous system's regulation of digestive function, helping to reduce symptoms and restore normal function over a course of treatment.

Energy & Vitality

Persistent fatigue, low energy and a general sense of not feeling well (what TCM practitioners describe as 'qi deficiency') responds well to acupuncture. By addressing the root cause of low energy within the TCM framework, treatments can help patients regain vitality, improve focus and feel more like themselves again.

Immune System Support

Regular acupuncture treatment may support immune system function, helping the body resist illness and recover more quickly when health is compromised. Some patients use maintenance acupuncture (visiting every 4–6 weeks) purely to support their overall health and wellbeing.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Acupuncture consultation at The Cardiff Chiropractors, Whitchurch

1

Detailed Health Assessment

Your initial consultation will include a detailed discussion about your health, symptoms, medical history and lifestyle. This allows your practitioner to gain a thorough understanding of your health and develop a personalised treatment plan.

2

Tongue & Pulse Diagnosis

As part of the TCM assessment, Martin will examine your tongue and feel your pulse at specific positions on both wrists. These are traditional diagnostic techniques that provide information about the state of your internal organs and energy systems, which helps determine the most appropriate acupuncture treatment approach.

3

Personalised Treatment Plan

Treatment takes place in a private and comfortable clinic room. Your acupuncturist will discuss their assessment findings with you and explain the proposed treatment approach before any needles are placed.

4

Your First Acupuncture Session

Acupuncture needles are inserted at carefully selected points. The needles are as fine as a human hair. Most patients feel little or no discomfort during insertion. Some describe a mild ache or tingling sensation (known as 'de qi') at the needle site, which is a normal and positive response. All acupuncture needles used are completely sterile and single-use, disposed of safely after each session. You may feel deeply relaxed or even sleepy during and after treatment. Most sessions last 45–60 minutes.

Why Martin's Approach is Different

1

Evidence-Based Techniques

Being a Chinese Medicine Lecturer and clinical supervisor, Martin brings both deep traditional knowledge and an understanding of Western medical evidence to his practice. He verifies that acupuncture is the most appropriate treatment for each patient's condition and refers to other healthcare professionals when appropriate. For conditions that respond better to chiropractic, physiotherapy or other interventions, Martin will say so honestly.

2

Continuous Learning & Development

Martin holds the highest qualifications available for acupuncturists in the UK and remains committed to ongoing professional development. His background as a lecturer and clinical supervisor means his practice is constantly informed by the latest developments in both Chinese medicine and Western healthcare research.

3

Whole-Person Care

What sets Martin apart is his commitment to treating the whole person, not just the presenting ailment. Dietary advice, lifestyle coaching, stress management and exercise guidance are integrated into treatment where relevant, because lasting health improvements come from addressing root causes, not just managing symptoms. Many patients who come to Martin for one condition find that their overall health and wellbeing improves significantly over the course of treatment.

How Acupuncture Works with Other Services

Complement Your Chiropractic Care

Acupuncture and chiropractic care work well together for musculoskeletal conditions. Where chiropractic addresses joint restriction and structural alignment, acupuncture supports pain management, reduces muscle tension and promotes healing in the surrounding soft tissues. Many of our patients combine both treatments for comprehensive, holistic care.

Enhance Your Massage Therapy

Acupuncture can be used alongside massage therapy to address pain and tension at a deeper level. The combination of acupuncture treatment with sports or remedial massage is particularly effective for chronic muscle tension, headaches, and stubborn soft tissue problems that don't resolve with massage alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine (as thin as a human hair) and insertion is usually painless or causes only a brief mild sensation. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the experience is. Some feel a mild ache, tingling or warmth at the needle site ('de qi'), a normal and positive sign that the point has been effectively stimulated. The vast majority of patients find acupuncture relaxing rather than uncomfortable.

Is it safe?

Yes. When practised by a qualified acupuncturist, acupuncture is very safe. All needles used by Martin are completely sterile and single-use, disposed of safely after each session, in line with clinical waste regulations. Martin is a full member of the British Acupuncture Council, which requires practitioners to adhere to strict standards of hygiene, safety and professional conduct.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies depending on your condition, how long you've had it, and your overall health. For acute conditions, 4–6 sessions may be sufficient. For chronic pain conditions or longer-standing health issues, a course of 8–12 sessions is often recommended initially. Martin will discuss realistic timelines during your first consultation and always works transparently about what to expect.

Is there evidence it works?

Yes. A substantial body of clinical research supports acupuncture's effectiveness for a range of conditions. NICE guidelines recommend acupuncture as a treatment option for chronic tension headaches and migraines. The British Acupuncture Council publishes a comprehensive evidence base covering dozens of conditions. Martin's approach integrates this evidence with Traditional Chinese Medicine principles.

Are the needles sterile?

Yes. All acupuncture needles used by Martin Genovese are completely sterile and single-use, sourced from licensed medical suppliers. They are disposed of in a sharps container after every session in line with clinical waste and infection control regulations. This is a requirement of British Acupuncture Council membership.

Can I combine with my medications?

In most cases, yes. Acupuncture is a complementary therapy and does not interact with most medications. However, Martin will always take a full medical history at your initial consultation, including all current medications. If you are taking blood thinners (anticoagulants), please inform Martin before your first appointment as this may affect needle placement and the choice of treatment.
