What Is Clinical Pilates?
Clinical Pilates is a rehabilitation-focused form of Pilates, originally developed for use in physiotherapy and healthcare settings. Unlike general Pilates classes, it is prescribed by a trained clinician who applies physiotherapy principles to design a programme specific to your condition. Joseph Pilates originally developed the Pilates method as a system of controlled movement, breathing, and strengthening, and clinical Pilates builds on those principles to address injury, chronic pain, and movement dysfunction.
At The Cardiff Chiropractors, sessions are led by qualified chiropractors with rehabilitation training, rather than a standard Pilates instructor. Each exercise is selected based on your clinical assessment, not a fixed class format.
Small equipment, including resistance bands, a magic circle and in some cases a reformer, may be used to add range and challenge to your exercises as your control and build strength improve. The reformer is a spring-based piece of equipment that allows precise control of resistance during Pilates exercises, and is used where clinically appropriate.
Traditional Pilates vs Clinical Pilates
Traditional Pilates classes follow the traditional Pilates method in a group setting with a structured format. Clinical Pilates is 1:1, led by a physiotherapist or musculoskeletal clinician, and tailored to individual health conditions and rehabilitation needs. Traditional Pilates is for fitness and conditioning; clinical Pilates is for recovery, injury prevention and therapeutic movement correction.

What Can Clinical Pilates Help With?
Clinical Pilates is designed for rehabilitation, chronic pain management and movement correction. Because every exercise programme is tailored to the individual, it is effective across a wide range of conditions. Common presentations we treat include:
✓
Back and neck pain, including sciatica and disc-related conditions
✓
Injury rehabilitation: post-sports, post-surgical and repeated flare-ups
✓
Posture correction and core strengthening, including abdomen and deep spinal muscles
✓
Chronic pain and conditions that have not responded to other treatment
✓
Balance and coordination problems affecting legs, hips and lower body
✓
Stress-related muscle tension and movement restriction
Clinical Pilates improves strength and control in muscles that are often weakened by injury or sedentary lifestyles. It is suitable for women during and after pregnancy, older adults, dancers, athletes and anyone advised to exercise but unsure where to begin.
What to Expect at Your First Appointment
Wherever you choose to attend, your experience is structured, supportive, and tailored.

1
Initial Assessment
We assess your posture, movement, symptoms, and goals. This initial consultation covers your full injury and health history. A clinical-level assessment of your posture, movement and muscle strength is carried out, forming the foundation for your exercise programme. The pricing initial assessment is £75 for 60 minutes and must be completed before Pilates sessions begin.
2
Personalised Programme
Your Clinical Pilates programme is designed specifically for you, with access to our online system with tutorial videos. Your exercise programme includes home exercises between sessions. The programme adapts as your body responds, keeping sessions appropriately challenging throughout.
3
One-to-One Sessions
Each session is guided to ensure safe and effective progress.
All Pilates sessions are 1:1. Your clinician observes every exercise, corrects form in real time, and adjusts the programme based on clinical progress. Equipment such as the reformer, resistance bands and small Pilates apparatus is introduced as sessions become more challenging. This physiotherapy-informed approach is what distinguishes clinical Pilates from standard group classes, and it is why patients achieve improvements in overall strength and muscle function that they cannot gain elsewhere.
