Subacromial Pain Syndrome Treatment in Cardiff

What Is Subacromial Pain Syndrome?

Subacromial Pain Syndrome (sometimes called shoulder impingement syndrome) is one of the most common causes of shoulder pain. It occurs when the tendons and soft tissues within the shoulder become irritated, sensitive, or overloaded as they pass through the narrow space beneath the acromion (the top part of the shoulder blade).

This can lead to pain when lifting the arm, reaching overhead, lying on the affected side, or performing repetitive movements.

At The Cardiff Chiropractors, we use a combination of evidence-informed rehabilitation, hands-on care, and Shockwave Therapy to help reduce pain, improve shoulder function, and support long-term recovery.

Common Symptoms of Subacromial Pain Syndrome

Physical Therapy Session

Symptoms can develop gradually or after a period of increased activity and may include:

  • Pain on the outside or front of the shoulder

  • Pain when reaching overhead

  • Discomfort when dressing or fastening a seatbelt

  • Pain lifting objects away from the body

  • Weakness in the shoulder or arm

  • Night pain, especially when lying on the affected side

  • Reduced range of movement

  • Pain during gym, sport, or work activities

Many people notice symptoms worsen with repetitive lifting, manual work, swimming, racquet sports, or prolonged desk posture.

What Causes Subacromial Shoulder Pain?

Subacromial pain syndrome is usually linked to irritation or overload of the rotator cuff tendons and surrounding tissues. Contributing factors may include:

  • Repetitive overhead activity

  • Rotator cuff weakness or overload

  • Poor shoulder blade control

  • Sudden increases in training or activity

  • Previous shoulder injuries

  • Reduced thoracic spine mobility

  • Postural strain

  • Age-related tendon changes

In many cases, the issue is not simply “something trapped” in the shoulder, but a combination of tendon sensitivity, movement dysfunction, and reduced load tolerance.

How Can Shockwave Therapy Help?

Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses targeted acoustic waves to stimulate healing within injured or irritated tissues.

For subacromial pain syndrome, Shockwave Therapy may help by:

  • Reducing persistent shoulder pain

  • Stimulating tissue healing responses

  • Improving blood flow to affected tissues

  • Supporting tendon recovery

  • Reducing muscle tension and sensitivity

  • Helping improve shoulder function and movement

Shockwave Therapy is commonly used alongside a structured rehabilitation programme to achieve the best outcomes.

What To Expect During Treatment

Your assessment will begin with a detailed discussion about your symptoms, activity levels, and goals. We will examine your shoulder movement, strength, mobility, and overall function to determine whether Shockwave Therapy is appropriate for you.

Treatment may include:

  • Shockwave Therapy

  • Shoulder rehabilitation exercises

  • Rotator cuff strengthening

  • Mobility and movement retraining

  • Hands-on therapy

  • Postural and ergonomic advice

  • Load management guidance

  • Return-to-sport or gym planning

Most patients require a course of treatments combined with progressive rehabilitation exercises.
